Oral tumors are an unfortunately common form of cancer in cats. The most common type is Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), which accounts for over 70% of oral tumors. Regardless of cell type, oral tumors in cats are often locally aggressive, invasive, and carry a guarded to poor prognosis. Here is an overview of how they form, how we diagnose them, and the best treatment and palliative care options.

What Are Oral Tumors?

Oral tumors develop within the mouth and jaw tissues of cats. While Squamous Cell Carcinoma is by far the most dominant type, other tumor types include fibrosarcoma, melanoma, and, less commonly, poorly differentiated or undefined tumors. These masses tend to grow rapidly and invade the local bone and soft tissues of the mouth, making early detection vital.

Common Signs to Watch For

Many cats are notorious for hiding oral pain and otherwise appear normal until the disease becomes advanced. Signs to monitor closely include:

  • Decreased appetite and weight loss
  • Difficulty eating, dropping food, or unusual mouth noises
  • Excessive drooling (with or without blood) and bad breath
  • Oral pain, pawing at the mouth, or facial swelling
  • Mild lethargy or a tooth loss site (especially a fang) that simply will not heal

How We Diagnose Oral Tumors

To determine the exact tumor type and assess how far it has expanded, a multi-step diagnostic approach is recommended:

  • Sedated Oral Examination & Biopsy: The first and most important diagnostic steps to officially confirm the type of tumor cells present.
  • Staging Lab Work: A complete blood count (CBC), chemistry panel, and urinalysis to check overall organ health.
  • Advanced Imaging & Lymph Nodes: Chest radiographs (X-rays) to ensure the disease has not spread to the lungs, alongside dental X-rays, a CT scan, and lymph node evaluation to plan potential therapy.

Treatment Options

Treatment is tailored to the tumor type, location, and individual family goals. Options focus on either aggressive intervention or the preservation of a comfortable quality of life.

1. Surgery and Advanced Oncology

  • Surgical excision is highly invasive and involves removing the portion of the jawbone affected by the mass. Surgery must be performed by a boarded surgeon, and an initial consultation for surgical planning is required. Note that surgery may not be possible if the mass is located too far back on the jaw.
  • Advanced adjunct treatments, such as post-surgery or palliative radiation therapy, can be considered with a medical oncologist, though specialized radiation capabilities are highly limited in the Northwest. Chemotherapy options are also available but unfortunately show limited clinical benefit for these specific types of tumors.

2. Palliative Treatment and Comfort Care

When definitive surgery is not pursued, our goal shifts entirely to reducing local inflammation, managing pain, and supporting appetite to maximize quality time. Success depends heavily on your cat’s comfort with taking oral medications.

  • Meloxicam: A once-daily oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that provides excellent pain control and has been shown in studies to exert direct anti-cancer effects against Squamous Cell Carcinoma cells.
  • Steroids (Kenalog or Depo-Medrol): Utilized if a patient has severe concurrent kidney disease and/or cannot tolerate oral medications. These are long-lasting steroid injections (Kenalog has a 7-day duration; Depo-Medrol has a 28-day duration). Note that steroids cannot be combined with Meloxicam.
  • Buprenorphine: An oral opioid pain medication administered directly into the cheek pouch every 8 to 24 hours as needed to control discomfort. The volume required is very small, and side effects are minimal.
  • Mirataz®: A transdermal appetite stimulant applied as a topical cream directly to the inner skin of your cat’s ear.
  • Cerenia®: Used to combat underlying nausea, support appetite, and effectively control excessive drooling caused by the physical tumor mass.
  • Antibiotics (Convenia® or Clavamox®): Prescribed to treat secondary oral infections within the tumor site. Convenia is a long-lasting injection that provides 10–14 days of coverage, while Clavamox is given orally twice daily as a

Prognosis and Quality of Life

Without aggressive surgical intervention, the typical prognosis timeline is 1 to 3 months. Eventually, the physical progression of the tumor will begin to impact day-to-day survival functions like normal breathing and swallowing. Using a structured quality-of-life scale can help you track their daily comfort and guide your family’s decisions.
